This program is designed to help small, minority and women-owned businesses thrive in the construction industry. Under this four-year program, mentor contractors have the opportunity to bid and work on projects ranging in value from $80,000 up to $750,000. Currently, CARA provides mentoring services to these firms by teaching them the fundamentals of project management, general conditions of the contract, project sequencing and coordination, how to obtain financing through small business loans and bonding, and how to understand SCA’s unique requirements. Firms are also mentored in contract administration, construction health and safety, scheduling, payment requisitions, submittals, project coordination, project management, and close-out. CARA mentors contractors on diversification with other governmental and non-governmental agencies. Given CARA’s extensive knowledge in building code rules and regulations, contractors also receive training in the areas of technical reports, building filling ad approvals, permitting process and given their direct access to the NYC Department of Buildings, help expedites the application process on behalf of contractors.
